Richard Durrant with Brighton Youth Orchestra String Ensemble

28 March 2020 : 7:30 pm 9:30 pm

We are sorry to announce that due to the current Coronavirus situation this event has been cancelled.

For this special concert in the synagogue the Brighton Youth Orchestra String Ensemble is teamed up with internationally renowned and eclectic guitarist Richard Durrant.

This year, Richard is undertaking an extraordinary concert tour which takes him by bicycle from Orkney to Santiago de Compostela in Northern Spain.

For this concert Richard will perform Vivaldi’s famous guitar concerto, originally written for the lute, and one of his own best known recorded works ‘Girl at the Airport‘.

The String Ensemble and Richard have teamed up several times in the past and Richard is always a favourite with audiences for his relaxed, informative style and brilliant playing. He is a passionate advocate of youth music and especially proud of having originally been a member of Brighton Youth Orchestra, where he played cello.

The String Ensemble, who amaze audiences and defy the title of ‘youth’ with their mature and accomplished performances, will also play music spanning the centuries from the Baroque to the 21st century.

The Ensemble is made up of players from the Brighton Youth Orchestra which was founded in the late 1940’s. The String Ensemble itself was founded in 1993 by Andrew Sherwood. It has an enviable reputation both locally and nationally and has won several National awards.

Several composers including Peter Copley and Howard Goodall have written specifically for them, they have given an hour-long live performance on Classic FM and performed at Inveraray Castle, the Japanese Embassy and the Albert Hall. Doors open at 7pm. Refreshments available.
